Overall tips for media sales job seekers:
1. Create a YOUNIQUE™ resume, however be flexible to adjust it to fit a particular job description for which you have qualifications.
2. Never pitch a job for which you haven’t read a job profile
3. Know YOUR worth, not what YOU want to make; know the difference between what you WANT to earn and what you NEED to earn; research the going rates for that position/industry
4. Research the company, the product and the managers before accepting a position
5. Interview the company – as a job seeker you should be prepared to do between 50 and 65% of the talking
6. Be prepared to talk about measurable accomplishments and the benefits they gave to previous employers
7. Don’t waste space on a resume with “References upon Request” – that is a given
8. Know your strengths, weaknesses and SKILLS… As you are the product, you should know it, package it, market it and sell it………..YOU are the only one who can do it.
9. Use a personal email address when pitching a job and not your business one, it is free, private and professional- however, do not use a nickname or cutesy handle as your emails may end up in spam.
10. Never bad mouth your current company – what goes around comes around and it is not professional
ACCESS YOUR SKILLS/ACCOMPLISHMENTS (or think about what makes YOU Unique)
1. What differences did you make for your past employer (or organization)
2. Don’t forget the benefits – if you state a fact about what you did, don’t forget how it benefited someone
3. Keep a folder with accomplishments as you go along, so when updating your ‘selling tools’ they are handy
4. Numbers look good – growth, savings, efficiency, etc.
5. Include only computer skills needed for that position (almost everyone knows basic programs so unless it is required, save the space)
6. What do YOU do to better yourself for your career? (join networking organizations, take classes on your dime, etc.)
7. How have your grown with each new position?
8. What do you do to succeed vs. others in your organization?
9. What training have you had to give you a leg up over others?
10. If 100 people pitched a job, why should you be the one to get hired?
