Current Title: Local Sales Manager-WUSN & WCFS Chicago
Company: CBS Radio
How long with Company: 3.5 years
How long have you been in the media industry? 12 years
Why did you choose a career in media? No one day is ever the same, you get to actually help people with their business, Radio is FUN and non-stop!
How did you get your first job in media? I interned at a radio station in college
What are some of the biggest challenges you have experienced in your career? The first few years of sales were challenging. Actually, sales, in general is challenging. Now that I coach new AE's-it's still as challenging as ever with the ever-changing media landscape and the evolution of technology on how to 'reach a consumer.' Also, moving from one broadcast company to take a position at another is a challenge because of completely different environments and thought processes.
What was your favorite job and why? So far, my favorite job is the position I am in right now (LSM) because I get to help people learn how to sell, I actually get to go out on sales calls and talk to clients. I get to watch "the light bulb go off" in the heads of my AE's when they have their "ah-ha" sales moment; Yet I also get to see a more global picture of the company-and why we do the things we do in terms of partnerships, sales packages and strategic alliances. Right now I also have a small voice in creating the future for CBS Radio, which is exciting.
What words of wisdom would you share with others about a career in media? Media is fun. It's a lot of hard work as well. If you want a challenging career where you can grow financially and professionally by your own personal merits, then a media sales job might be perfect for you. If you are the type of person who likes to learn new things every day, you like that your daily calendar is never the same, and you like entertainment-from concerts to sporting events-and you're willing to work your butt off in order to afford these "perks" then a job in media sales is right up your alley. Oh yeah, did I mention it's a lot of hard work?
